La presence of the wolf and damage to farms in the province of Sondrio have created a heated debate that saw as protagonists a provincial official and the Mayor of Chiavenna Luca Della Bitta, to whom the support of Federcaccia Sondrio and Federcaccia Lombardy. Let's go in order. An article appeared in the columns of the newspaper La Provincia di Sondrio after yet another attack on sheep by farmers in Val Fontana, in the municipal area of Chiuro, dated 21 April, with about twenty preyed animals. The words of the wildlife technician of the Province of Sondrio, Maria Ferloni, they did argue. «Obviously these predations are compensated and we will proceed, as always, in this sense, however, it must also be understood, that we need to look after our animals. The usual way, to take them to high altitudes and leave them for months, in the wild, completely unattended, is not suitable.
We have been repeating this for years, and yet the problems are repeated as they are. We continue to pay compensation, however, I don't know, until this policy is implemented ». Heavy words, challenged on the front line by the Mayor of Chiavenna, who defends the stakeholders of the whole territory. “… Read that, by voice of a provincial official, following the presence of a wolf specimen questioning decades of culture, agriculture and breeding of my land hurts me. I am sure it was not the line of the provincial administration of the past years e I think it's not even the current one. Accusing those who, alone, with passion, ability, energy every day takes care of our mountains and our territory of being out of time for a wolf (with all respect for all forms of life) seems to me paradoxical and unacceptable. I, I will be old-fashioned but I do not betray our farmers, our breeders (in a professional form or as a hobby / amateur / personal passion).
I continue to be with them. I still think that if there is someone with his animals, be they sheep, goats or cows, he lives in the territory, we have hope. I continue to believe that we have to thank these people of ours because they are the guardians of our land at a time when they need them so much. Whether they are farmers, ranchers, hobbyists or hunters. I believe that as long as there will be someone who takes care of the territory, starting from the world of agriculture, of breeding and also of hunting who choose to stick to the rules and put us, every dawn and every day of the year to get up early for this, the institutions must be at their side ”. Federcaccia Sondrio sided with the Mayor of Chiavenna and Provincial Councilor Luca Della Bitta and asked for a position to be taken by the institutions.
“We don't do it as many will say to grace us there benevolence of politics - explains Federcaccia Sondrio through the voice of the Provincial President Emanuele Murada -. We do it because many of our associates are Farmers before being Hunters. There are both professional farmers but also those who see agriculture as a supplement to income, but the spirit that unites them all is one, the love for their land and for their own traditions. And if today we can enjoy a landscape that everyone envies us, we must say thanks to them. But until when will they make it? This depends on the institutions at all levels: Mayors, Presidents of the Mountain Communities, Provincial Councilors, President of the Province all must work (and in part they are already doing it) to help these. modern 'heroes' to fight against the advance of metropolitan culture which likes to think that the Province is a Natural Park for wolves and bears, but when it arrives on weekends it does not tolerate the smell of manure.
The words I read yesterday in a local newspaper about the advance of the wolf in the province signed by Dr. Ferloni hurt me, and they must hurt all those who know what mountain agriculture is, heroic agriculture. They are a slap in the face of the entire Alpine rural civilization. This is why I appreciated the words of the Councilor and Mayor Luca Della Bitta, which I hope will also be followed by those of many other directors. The officer I expect you to have common sense to resign! If this is not the case, I am sure that this time the institutions will be able to do nothing but intervene decisively ”.
