Plurality of reality
It is unfortunate to note, once again, that some elements of the hunting community are failing to effectively support hunting, sometimes giving the impression of pursuing strategies that risk being counterproductive rather than constructive. We therefore believe it is our duty to provide some clarification, first and foremost to our members, but also to all hunters in the Veneto region, regarding Federcaccia's position on the issue of wood pigeon huntingIt should be noted that this increasingly popular form of hunting attracts a growing number of enthusiasts and has led, over time, to the creation of several dedicated clubs. This diversity may have led to some misunderstanding; therefore, without any intention of diminishing the role of other organizations, it should be noted that the Italian Wood Pigeon Club is not a branch of Federcaccia.
Data collection
Our association, in response to the needs of its members and in line with the evolving context, established a Coordination Committee dedicated to the wood pigeon several years ago, in collaboration with ANUU. This Coordination Committee is primarily responsible for data collection and scientific research, including the study of this species in relation to the European turtle dove, with particular reference to the identification of nesting sites. The Coordination Committee is responsible for monitoring, with scientific rigor, the effects of management interventions. To this end, it works in close collaboration with the academic world, ensuring that the data collected meets high standards of reliability. It should also be noted that the Italian Wood Pigeon Club and the aforementioned Coordination Committee do not operate jointly and do NOT necessarily share the same positions on all issues, particularly regarding the pre-opening of the park.
Protection of the agricultural sector
For Federcaccia Veneto, and others, the early opening of wood pigeon hunting represents a sustainable and viable activity. Our technical position is clear: to safeguard hunting and avoid potential future problems, including with respect to the protection of the agricultural sector, it is a priority to address the species' annual increase in numbers (i.e., young born during the year). From this perspective, extending hunting days and hours, as well as the associated hunting bags, in September, starting with the early opening, could be an effective tool. Furthermore, intensifying hunting during this period contributes to the protection of sensitive agricultural crops, which are currently maturing.
The good of hunting
Conversely, direct interventions on breeding birds during the spring and summer months carry the risk of negatively impacting the conservation of the species. In conclusion, since we care about clarification, but also, and above all, about the well-being of hunting, we take this opportunity to invite you to participate in the research activities of the Wood Pigeon Coordination, which is monitoring nesting birds this season.
