On the occasion of world day dedicated to the conservation of migratory birds also Hunting Federation with its Studies and Research Office e ACMA, the sector dedicated to aquatic migratory species, want to highlight the attention and interest in their protection by recalling the initiatives carried out to achieve this goal. Hunters actively and consistently contribute to the conservation of all migratory birds in several ways, both through study and research (censuses) and through environmental management. The future of the survival of these wonderful animals will depend on the conservation of habitats and ecosystems.
There are many examples of environmental restoration carried out by hunters in Italy, which are highlighted especially in their effectiveness with regard to wetlands. Considering only four Italian regions (Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany) we calculated that the wetlands managed or completely created by hunters exceed 24.000 hectares (18.500 of water and 5.500 of vegetation). Within these wisely managed areas there is a large part of the migratory aquatic avifauna that can enjoy the ideal environment for all its most important life stages, being very useful even outside the hunting period and for sensitive species that cannot be hunted. Many of them also exploit these areas for reproduction and a wide variety for wintering.
From the national censuses managed by ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) it emerges that only in Veneto region about one million migratory birds overwinter each year in environments managed by the hunting world. We believe that migratory birds must and can have a future where an active interest in them is maintained within the Italian and world population. Excluding the link between man and animal ideologically will not bring benefits either to man or to these mysterious animals, which still have to teach us much more about the mystery of migration.
