Animalist absurdity: Macerata, a group of animal rights activists frees a hippo from the circus Orfei; the animal runs away in a panic and dies after being hit by a car.
A hippopotamus from the Orfei Circus was freed by a group of animal rights activists and died after being hit by a car. It happened during the night between December 27th and 28th in Villa Potenza, Macerata. The eight-year-old female hippopotamus, Aisha, weighing 1,500 kilograms, had been freed along with other animals during an animal rights raid. Freed during the raid, it managed to reach provincial road 361, where it was hit and killed by a passing car. This was the fate of a hippopotamus from the Orfei Circus, camped in Villa Potenza (Macerata). The twenty-five-year-old driver of the car was slightly injured and was unable to avoid the animal. The vehicle was destroyed. The killed hippopotamus was an eight-year-old female hippo, Aisha. Animal rights activists are believed to have tampered with the circus fence: Carabinieri, police, firefighters, and veterinarians from the Asur (National Health Authority) were on site. The other freed animals (giraffes and dromedaries) have been recovered. The circus owner has filed a complaint.

According to the circus' story, one of the activists who entered the tent would have groped a 15-year-old trapeze artist, an episode that was also filmed with a camera by the circus managers: the Brescia police will investigate the case. Only last week some animal rights activists had reported the presence in the circus of two Chow Chow dogs wearing panda make-up. The two animals were kidnapped by the forest police and the circus owner was sued for animal abuse and fraud against spectators.
