Question in the Senate
The question of moufflons of the Isola del Giglio it was also explored during a question to the Senate in which the Minister of the Environment, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, took the floor. The holder of the department replied to the 5 Star Movement that he wanted clarifications regarding these ungulates.
What did the minister say
Pichetto Fratin's words are quite eloquent: the mouflons we are talking about are huntable, as they are allochthonous. As for the ancestral DNA of these animals, as noted by the international scientific journal Diversity, the minister underlined how the genetic characterization of the mouflon would in no way be exhaustive, given that the sample examined so far is small.
The position of the OIPA
In this regard, the OIPA (International Organization for the Protection of Animals) intervened: “In the midst of the environmental crisis and in the face of valid and non-bloody alternative solutions, it is unthinkable that, even today, people resort to weapons and carnage. A forward-looking policy, also in the economic interest of the island, should do everything possible to identify tools capable of protecting the life of animals with a view to peaceful coexistence with our species".
