As direct interested parties and representatives of this hunting specialty we find it essential and urgent to report attention on MORIGLIONE. A little less than a month at the beginning of the hunting season and still some regions, in particular Veneto and Lombardy, have not taken steps to allow a controlled management of the collection of this species which fascinates many specialist hunters. The reasons and situations are the most disparate, but the result does not change. For what concern Veneto the political assurances of an appropriate resolution supplementing the calendar have not yet materialized. In this region in recent years, thanks to the work done by hunters in manage wetlands and to maintain the hunting traditions, it has been possible to make it fundamental for the pochard both during the autumn migration and during the breeding season.
The officially recognized data proves this and it would be a crime to make this result vanish since, if the hunting interest is lost, consequently the incentive to maintain and invest in these environments is lost. For weeks, if not months, the Faunistic and Agro-Environmental Studies and Research Office of Federcaccia provided the Veneto Region with the specifications for the implementation of a regional management plan in line with the AEWA agreement, but it was not intended to give it no follow up. For the Lombardia instead, at the moment, there is no desire on the part of either the administrations or some associations to make possible a measured withdrawal of this diver. A grave injustice considering the strong tradition and interest of hundreds of hunters who frequent the great lakes and even the scullers.
It is true that the hunting calendar issue this year in the Lombardy Region is very intricate. Hoping that course will change, we, as direct interested parties, offer our broadest collaboration to contribute to a viable solution and at least open a dialogue. Above all, a ban without justified reasons can create reactions that cannot be shared. Our task as an association that protects aquatic hunters is to support and discuss with the public administration to arrive at concrete and technically valid resolutions within the timeframes useful for their application. However, we point out that simple resolutions without valid management plans could trigger the conditions for opportunistic appeals risking to invalidate the work carried out and prohibit the withdrawal for the remainder of the season, so the implementation of the plans is crucial. We have also proposed various solutions for the reporting of culled animals (which is requested by the EU and which seems to worry the hunting office due to the excessive commitment) such as the use of an application (purchasable from the Tuscany Region for example) or the creation of a specific file (as done by the Marche Region for the turtledove).
If the latter case were chosen, we also gave our willingness to collaborate in the collection and analysis of data, more than that…! We therefore invite all hunters interested in this species to solicit their hunting leaders (of any association they are) and their public administrations for the immediate realization of what has been said. In the duck's beak! (Source: ACMA).
