A long wait
MEP Sergio Berlato, president of ACR (Associazione Cultura Rurale), also spoke on behalf of CONFAVI, FCR and ACV to shed light on an issue that must not be put on the back burner: “We have been waiting for years for the Veneto Regional Council to equip itself with a regional management and containment plan for the cormorant, a species whose excessive presence in Veneto is causing enormous damage to aquaculture activities and is decimating fish fauna throughout the region”.
Business in serious difficulty
The note continues: "We have been hearing about this Plan for a long time but, so far, there has been no sign of it. Some even believe that the Plan has been ready for some time but that the Regional Council has kept it jealously buried in its drawers. In the meantime, aquaculture and fishing activities are forced to close their doors, exhausted by the continuous predation of cormorants and other fish-eating birds that are making aquaculture activities no longer economically justifiable."
Damage to the entire ecosystem
The position ends with a hint of confidence: "With the excessive presence of these fish-eating birds, fish fauna is drastically decreasing in all the courses and bodies of water of the Veneto. Yet the Regional Council of Veneto should know that if aquaculture activities are forced to close, the damage that the entire ecosystem would suffer would be irreversible. We confidently await the Regional Council to extract from its dusty drawers this Regional Plan for the management and containment of fish-eating birds in order to save aquaculture activities in Veneto and the entire ecosystem that they have so far preserved".
