After two years the total hunting ban which is currently in force in Albania it may disappear. The digital newspaper Quartz he reconstructed the story, explaining what is about to happen in the Balkan country. Of the five billion "European" birds that migrate in the spring, about a billion is shot down, in particular by hunters from Malta, Cyprus and Italy and, even more evidently, from those of the Balkans. Until 2014 Albania was one of the favorite destinations for hunting tourism, then the national government decided to totally prohibit hunting in the territory. By the way, the history of Albanian hunting is rather complex and articulated.
After the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha (until 1985), hunting became increasingly popular and, two years after the ban on the Tirana government, the situation could go back to what it once was. The environmental and hunting associations have been in talks with the executive for some time and there is no shortage of those who have suggested extend the ban in question for another five years. The prohibition was announced 24 months ago with great intentions to be achieved, even if it was not a real success. The first year of the ban, in fact, was characterized by a dramatic decline in hunting, as noted by some researchers.
Over time, then, the authorities decided to loosen controls, with all the consequences of the case. So there is a regulation to be respected and no one who applies it, the hunting levy has turned into a sort of open dissent, a way in which a group of people show that they do not like government choices. According to the researchers, the current state of affairs dictates one complete revision of the Inspectorate of the Environment and Forests, which has proven not to work efficiently, without forgetting that without the ban hunting could be regulated once and for all and with better results.
There are those who are ready to bet the return of many hunters to Albania, in particular in the mountainous regions of the country (in the north and east to be precise), but not everyone talks about a complete failure to describe the experience of the last two years. Effectively a greater awareness of the importance of local fauna was recognized, in addition to the need to reduce the damage caused in the two decades preceding the start of the ban. The government has announced that it will release the results of its consultation before the end of March.
