The value of Made in Italy products
A direct and indirect economic value of 8 billion euros, a total turnover of civil weapons and ammunition of almost one billion euros (up 59,5% compared to 2019) and a weight of 0,38% on the Italian GDP. These are the numbers of the industry of weapons and ammunition for civil, sporting and hunting use in Italy, which immediately highlight the value of the Made in Italy products of the sector for the rest of the world, with 87% of the industrial value of production destined for foreign markets. The updated data were shared by the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, which examined the period 2023. The direct economic value of the sector, which includes the production of civilian weapons and ammunition, the supply system and distributors, amounts to over 1,3 billion euros, with a very positive import-export balance. This survey also calculates the value of the sectors linked to the sporting activities of shooting and hunting, which in the reference period generated a direct and indirect economic value of almost 6 billion euros. The expenditure incurred by shooters and hunters exceeds 3 billion euros.
Hunting and shooting
The number of people employed in the civil weapons and ammunition sector, also considering the related industries, provides work to 19.000 workers while, if we also consider the related sectors of hunting and shooting, over 88.000 people are expected to be employed in 2023. The positive and growth data that emerged from the research are certainly the result of the progress and efficiency of the production processes implemented by Italian gun companies, which confirm themselves as a guarantee of quality recognized throughout the world.
The Paris Olympics
“Also for 2023, the value of the Italian arms industry is confirmed as an excellence for the foreign market, as can be seen from the export data. We are satisfied that the study carried out by theUniversity of Urbino demonstrates and precisely quantifies the economic value generated by the sector, highlighting its positive impact on the country's GDP." – commented Giovanni Ghini, President of ANPAM. – A success that is also reflected in the sports sector, if we consider that at the 2024 Paris Olympics, athletes who used Italian rifles won 18 medals out of a total of 18, while "Made in Italy" ammunition recorded 14 victories out of 18. Further proof that production know-how and extremely high precision standards make the Italian arms industry a sector appreciated by over 100 million hunters and sport shooters in the world." The study by the University of Urbino Carlo Bo has several objectives: to analyze the civilian arms sector in Italy, in relation to the production of weapons and ammunition intended for sports, hunting and personal defense from the point of view of the production and distribution system; to measure the economic weight in terms of turnover and added value; and to estimate the induced value on the entire system.
