The Arosio Observatory collaborates in the realization of the Atlas of wintering species in Italy.
While the study season on post-nuptial migration at the FEIN Ornithological Observatory of Arosio ended on 22 December 2011, where more than 6.000 subjects were analyzed, the study activity is continuing with the monitoring of wintering species in the territory in question. The aim is to analyze those species that during the less favorable season stop on site to seek shelter and food.
The project, which this year has reached its fifteenth edition, thanks to the collection of data through scientific ringing and observations, sees the Observatory contribute, through the insertion of the data collected on a special website, also to the monitoring which for some time has been carried out by more than a thousand detectors scattered throughout the country for the creation of a winter atlas of wintering species.
The Atlante project, coordinated on the Ornitho multimedia platform, ornitho.it is sponsored by ISPRA with the collaboration of all the Italian scientific ornithological groups, including the CISO / Italian Center for Ornithological Studies.
To realize the importance of the national project, just think that in the first fifteen days of December 2011, over 47.000 new data were archived. With these, from the winter of 2009/2010, we reach over 365.000, for a total of 6.150.000 individuals.
This is undoubtedly an excellent result which bodes well for the complete success of the project. Reports of the presence of 340 species were collected in December and January, of which 29 are alien.
To this end, it should be remembered that Ornitho is the common information platform for Italian ornithologists and birdwatchers, whose objective is the study and conservation of birds, birdwatching and their promotion.
This multimedia reality is proving to be a precious work tool and its creation has contributed to giving a more advanced image to Italian ornithology.
