Weapons in Europe. Below is a technical note drawn up by Admiral Peveri, who at the meeting of the Committee's board scheduled for January 4th was officially vested with the responsibility of following and evaluating the progress of the European Commission's work.
Admiral Peveri then officially enters the operational team of the Directive Committee 477. We publicly thank him for his precious adherence and for the personal commitment he has decided to dedicate to the defense of the interests of the legal holders of civilian and sporting weapons.
Here is the note relating to a recent survey promoted by the Commission and boasted as representative in its results. The reality is quite another.
In the letter signed by Dr. Fabio Marini 'Answer to firearms complaint' we read the following sentence: "Our recent Eurobarometer survey indicated that most Europeans support stricter firearm controls, and two-thirds support EU action - in cooperation with national authorities - against firearms trafficking "(translated:" Our recent Eurobarometer survey indicated that most Europeans are in favor of stricter firearm controls, and two thirds support EU action - in cooperation with national authorities - firearms fire against trafficking ”, I wanted to deepen.
Here are my considerations which I hope can serve as a further element to demolish the theories of the Commission: First of all, it is believed that we cannot attribute to the majority of Europeans what Marini says, since the sample of the statistical survey carried out with the method CATI (computer-assisted telephone interview) concerns a sampling of 0,0064% of the population (approximately one thousand for each European country, excluding Malta and Cyprus, which had 500 respondents, for a total of 26.555 individuals on a basis of 412.555.713. 49): on page XNUMX this is implicitly admitted by the compilers of the document themselves.
The sample of 1000 people per country - moreover - could have been valid only if, instead of using the random method of "resident over 15 years of age", representative / competent categories of the data that would have been collected had been chosen; instead, a campipne replied that 90% had never owned weapons. It should be borne in mind that to have a confidence level of 95%, with a margin of error even as high as 10%) for a country like Italy (about 50 million) a base of about 4800 people would be needed.
The 9 questions of the questionnaire from which the evaluations arise were not compiled according to the correct criteria (or perhaps it would be better to say 'honest]'…) of the statistical surveys (see Istat document) as;
▪ there are no filter questions;
▪ questions Q1-Q2-Q3 clearly condition the answers of the following ones;
▪ question Q 4 is tendentious, the only country in Europe where substantially different arms legislation is the United Kingdom;
▪ since it turns out that 90% of the interviewees have never owned weapons, the relative answers have no meaning as those who have never bought a weapon probably do not know what it implies (it would have made sense with a filter question like "Do you know which weapons are legal in your country? ";
▪ the sequence of the questions is clearly based on the logic of the proposal of the Directive and in any case does not take into account the fact that the order established in the sequence of the arguments can affect the answer, creating distortions in the data. For example, if you want a spontaneous opinion on job satisfaction, it is best not to ask questions about the specific characteristics of the work performed that could focus attention on some particularly pleasant or unpleasant aspects. "(See Istat page 23). In fact, asking “Do you think that over the next five years the level of crime using firearms” increase… .. (Question Q2) obviously affects almost all the other 7 that follow.
Our assessment is that therefore the survey in question was carried out with distorting criteria in order to reach the desired and predetermined conclusions by the Commission and that it is not technically correct and that, therefore, it lacks a real representativeness of the opinion of European citizens.
At the same time we want to remind you that it is of HUGE IMPORTANCE that all shooters complete the questionnaire promoted by the European Commission BY FEBRUARY 1st 2016.
Thank you all for the support
Best regards
Andrea Gallinari
Chairman of the Directive Committee 477
