The Chivasso case
Coldiretti Torino expresses solidarity with the farmer affected by avian flu in the municipality of Chivasso. But the president of Coldiretti Turin, Bruno Mecca Cici specifies: «The case of avian influenza found in a poultry farm in Chivasso should not cause alarm among consumers. The very discovery of the animal positive for the virus confirms once again how our farms are absolutely constantly monitored by public veterinary services».
Reassurances to consumers
Coldiretti Torino reiterates once again that avian influenza is not transmitted to humans through the consumption of chicken meat or eggs. "Consumers can continue to buy chicken and eggs without fear. Instead, cases like this invite us to reflect on how crucial our agriculture is for the daily supply of our food: not only does the affected farmer not work, but the food chain does not receive its products. A confirmation of how much the problems of agriculture concern everyone."
Constant monitoring
Coldiretti Torino reminds that poultry farms are among the most monitored economic activities with the obligation to respect rigorous biosecurity protocols whose compliance is certified and controlled with constant inspections. «Few people know that in a chicken or laying hens farm the health of the animals is continuously monitored. Furthermore, more and more farms have agreed to integrate safety systems by adhering to the animal welfare and health control system called Classifarm indicated by the European health system on which Coldiretti organizes training and consultancy initiatives. But this happens in Italy and in Europe. The same does not happen in non-EU countries where the same control and management systems for farms are not in force. An aspect that must open a reflection on the right of consumers to demand the same quality standards for imported chickens and eggs» (source: Coldiretti Torino).
