Among the hunting dogs there are some breeds that are particularly suitable for living with the family, thanks to theirs lively and playful character. One of these is the Beagle, term derived fromEnglish Begle or from Celtic Beag which means precisely small. The breed, although small, has characteristics that make it a ideal hunter especially for the hunting hare, pheasants and foxesi.
The breed of English origins, derives from the intersection between theHarrier and other hounds always coming from the Anglo-Saxon area, which soon became the favorite breed of the Queen Elizabeth I. In 1800 Philip Honeywood, decided to improve the characteristics of the breed, preferring thehunting aspect than the physical one.
Later, thanks to the English breeder ThomasJohnson, it was decided to pay particular importance tophysical aspect, while developing a mild and sociable character, also perfect for making the Beagle an excellent companion dog perfect for growing in the family.

After an initial spread in England, hunting dogs landed in several European countries. In France they were so successful that they became the most popular breed. In Italy, the spread was not immediate. In general they are considered pet dogs and as regards the hunting activity, they are used for the wild boar hunting.
