“Monzec” project
«The hunting world confirms once again that it is an important player in the territory, always ready to collaborate in the care and protection of the environment. And in this case, also to prevent diseases transmitted by ticks». This is what the provincial councilor delegated for hunting and fishing, Silvia Calligaro, stated on the sidelines of the first study day of the "Monzec" project, hosted by the Cortina Alpine Hunting Reserve last Thursday (1 August); Also present was the representative of the hunting districts of the province, Paolo Zanetti, together with personnel from the Provincial Police. In fact, the hunters of Cortina are called upon to play a role of great importance in the study of ticks that will be carried out by "Monzec".
Communication and prevention
This is an Interreg VI-A Italy Austria 2021-2027 – CLLD Dolomiti Live project which arises from the collaboration of several partners belonging to different but neighboring territories. The project aims to carry out a complete monitoring of ticks in the area of East Tyrol, Val Pusteria and the province of Belluno, through the activity of the hunting community as a basis for communication, information, prevention and further research on the regional effects of climate warming on transmissible infections. Ulss 1 Dolomiti supports, as a partner, the Austrian laboratory of Außervillgraten of Dr. Walder Gernot, specialized in hygiene, microbiology, infectious diseases and tropical medicine.
Parasites to check
Among the collaborating entities there is also the Cortina Game Reserve. Hunters are asked to photograph a portion behind the ear of the hunted animal, to understand how many and which parasites there are. The photo is then uploaded to a specific app and sent to the Austrian laboratory for data analysis. «Furthermore, hunters are also given a series of test tubes to collect ticks attached to their skin, in case they find them on themselves during a hunting trip» explains the president of the Rac of Cortina, Bruno Menardi. «We are honored to be able to give our contribution to this very interesting project, which we believe is useful in the study and monitoring of ticks».
The importance of hunters
«The hunting world confirms itself as a very valid ally in the care and protection of the territory» underlines councilor Calligaro, who thanks the hunters and agents of the Province, given that technical support also comes from the Provincial Police. «I hope it is the demonstration – which we professionals and we inhabitants of the Belluno area certainly don't need – that hunters are not what certain ideology demonizes, but represent important figures in the concrete management of the mountains».
