For years now, Beretta shotguns have been leaders on all clay shooting fields, excelling in the so-called ham competitions and even winning Olympic laurels. In Paris, athletes with Beretta shotguns, in this case the legendary DT11, won 14 medals out of 15 available (5 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze).
Clearly the DT11 is the Formula 1 of shotguns with technical characteristics that can only be appreciated by expert shooters, for this reason Beretta has always offered entry level guns, particularly suitable for beginners or for those who dedicate themselves to clay pigeon shooting for pleasure and without wanting to invest large sums of money in the gun but without having to give up having a high-performance shotgun.
Pursuing this concept and with the intention of bringing more and more enthusiasts closer to clay shooting, in the wake of the old 682 and 690 black, the brand new Beretta 688 Performance is born.
The 688 Performance, thanks to a wider and 55 g heavier receiver than previous models, the pistol grip stock in laminated wood with a ridge, developed for competition, helps to optimize weight distribution and balance and is equipped with the B-Fast® comb adjustment system. The unbeatable ballistics of the Steelium® Optimabore® HP barrels with elongated fore cone give the 688 the renowned performance of a Beretta shotgun: uniform and dense patterns, reduced recoil and muzzle climb. All in one to allow shooters of all levels to think big right from the start. The group click It features an adjustable selective single trigger (from -4 mm to +4 mm), the selector, present only in the Sporting version, is located inside the safety lever.
Le cane Steelium® Optimabore® HP and their extended 80 mm barrel cone guarantee great reliability and excellent performance. Steelium® is the seal of guarantee of all barrels produced in Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta, which was founded in 1526 as a barrel manufacturer, even before becoming a manufacturer of complete weapons. 500 years of experience that is still evident today, also with the help of the most advanced production technologies.
Every single Beretta Steelium® barrel is made with the exclusive Beretta tri-alloy steel (Ni, Cr, Mo) and goes through deep drilling, cold hammer forging and vacuum distension. This entire process guarantees smoother ballistics that help reduce recoil and muzzle climb and guarantees perfect, denser and more uniform patterns with any type of ammunition: with lead or steel shot.
The barrels are chambered in 70 mm for the Trap version (18,4 mm forend diameter with a 10×10 mm top rib) and 76 mm for the Sporting version (18,6 mm forend diameter with a 10×8 mm top rib) and are available in lengths of 71, 76 and 81 cm for both versions.
The barrels, assembled in a single block with internal chrome plating, are equipped with fixed chokes **/* in the case of the Trap version, while the Sporting version is equipped with a set of 5 interchangeable external Optimachoke® HP chokes which guarantee unparalleled resistance to corrosion and the power of even steel shot.
I had the opportunity to try the Sporting version, with 76 cm barrels and the brand new Rottweill cartridges, at the TAV Bettolino, with Aldo Lovazzani, responsible for relations with Beretta shooters and the development of competition shotguns. The 688 Performance immediately proved to be very stable and ready to shoulder, confirming what was previously stated, the recoil and muzzle climb very low, the lamellar stock certainly contributes to optimizing its stability. The shotgun with black action, dark gray stock and fore-end has a modern line and a current and attractive design. Certainly a gun that will appeal to young shooters but also attractive to the more experienced.
