Beretta Silver Pigeon 1 cal. 28 and .410 - In recent years we have seen an explosion in the demand for small arms: all the manufacturing companies, whether small artisan companies or large companies worldwide, have proposed shotguns in calibers 28 and 410 in various versions and models. This trend is the result of a hunt dedicated more and more to passion and less to the game bag, where the possibility of competing with light weapons and lightly spliced cartridges fascinates the most sporty and demanding hunters. The production capacity and modern mechanization allow the manufacture of shotguns with action frames dedicated to small calibers which, combined with the increasing efficiency of the ammunition, allow hunting activities to be carried out with great satisfaction, even on demanding and robust prey.
Beretta naturally it has various proposals in both 28 and .410 caliber, starting with the well-known Silver Pigeon over / under to get up to the mythical SO10EELL.
Today we speak of over-and-under shotgun more classic and entry level: the Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon 1. Produced in four calibers - 12, 20, 28 and .410 - it is a shotgun that represents the basis of all the production of over and under Beretta, super tested, known and appreciated by hunters from all over the world. Precisely for this reason, the “small” version could not be missing. In 2014 to create it, a small action frame was produced that can accommodate both the 28 and .410 barrels, enriched laterally by a sober engraving with floral motifs that refines the design while on the receiver chest, in addition to the. engraving is the logo with the Beretta trident.
Even the bridge, substantially smooth, has a slight floral motif in the central area, while the key has an engraving that accompanies the one in the upper part of the action, in addition - of course - to the checkering on the palmette. There is also a sober engraving on the auget release of the fore-end, whose aesthetics is decidedly remarkable.
The closure is classic and unmistakable Beretta, equipped with trapezoidal shoulder straps and double truncated cone bolt with automatic play recovery, which acts in the upper part of the receiver so as to work in axis and avoid any bending of the steel. To load the hammers, there are two cylindrical punches on the base of the receiver which are activated by the teeth on the cross of the forend: this is the perfect Beretta mechanism already used in the entire 686 and 687 series.
Both rifles have a grade 2 walnut stock and forend, 20 mm MicroCore rubber butt plate capable of optimally absorbing the already light recoil. The fold is the classic hunting one: 36,5 mm at the hake and 57,5 mm at the heel, with a length of 376 mm.
The single trigger system was chosen for the shot. The slider safety is positioned on the receiver and incorporates the selector, so that it is always ready for use, even with the rifle on the gun. A red dot will indicate the selection as the first barrel of the lower one, while two dots of the upper one.
The rods, as now the whole production Beretta, are Steelium, Beretta steel with deep drilling, cold hammering and vacuum stress relieving, to always guarantee the best results in terms of shot pattern and shot penetration. The coupling between the barrels and the sleeve takes place by welding in Monobloc, as can be seen from the welding cord. The rods are available in three different lengths: 67, 71 and 76 cm.
The rib is ventilated and 6 × 6 anti-reflective guilloche pattern, while the side ribs are full and in the case of the 28 shorter, interrupting in the portion covered by the fore-end. All barrels are equipped with chokes Beretta Mobile choke interior and assembly key, housed inside the polymer box together with the warranty and instruction booklet.
I superimposed Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon 1 in caliber 28 and .410, they are excellent adventure companions, light (with 71 cm barrels, approximately 2,8 kg for the 28 cal. and 3,0 kg for the .410), easy to handle and ready, in the different configurations that can be used for each type hunting, from the shed to the wandering with the pointing dog.
Considering the great excitement and interest in small calibers, for those who want to try their hand at the platform, Beretta proposes the 686 Silver Pigeons also in version Sporting, for skeet shooting, slightly heavier with 8 × 8 wide rib and adjustable B-Fast shooting stock.
