Brussels, 17 February 2025. «While the institutions speak, our farmers are forced to abandon their activities because, every day, they are victims of attacks by wolves and other large predators, with huge damage not only of an economic, occupational and environmental nature, but also of a psychological nature. Our shepherds and our farmers unfortunately feel defenseless and abandoned by the institutions. The animal-environmentalist ideology is based on some conjectures such as "you can live with the wolf, just use fences or guard dogs, measures that have proven to be highly ineffective.
And again, “the wolf is tame because it does not attack people”, a statement that has proven to be absolutely false, as demonstrated by the many recorded attacks on people. Another narrative to be debunked is that according to which “the wolf is only a bio regulator”.
Try telling this fanciful story to our farmers and shepherds. In reality, there is too much money circulating around the wolf. Just think of the tens of millions of euros of public resources allocated to finance the projects of the European Commission's LIFE program that have favored the return and reintroduction of large carnivores.
And it is on this criterion, strictly economic, that the animal-environmentalist ideology revolves, in love with the resources that revolve around the wolf, rather than with this great carnivore».
This is what was stated by the Honorable Sergio Berlato, ECR/FdI MEP, speaking in the Agriculture Committee of the European Parliament during the exchange of views with the European Commission on wolf management and its impact on agriculture and rural development.
