The UNA Foundation – Man, Nature, Environment – AB Agrivenatoria Biodiversitalia , in collaboration with the Observatory on Crime in Agriculture and the Agro-food System , and as part of their respective commitment to facilitating an exchange of projects between environmental, agricultural, hunting, scientific and academic entities, have initiated a discussion with leading experts on the reform of Article 9 of the Constitution . The aim is to discuss the place of animals, whose species must be governed and protected by humans, in the new formulation of the constitutional text.
Following constitutional law n.1/2022, which amended articles 9 and 41 of the Constitution, environmental issues were included in the text of the Italian fundamental law, specifying that the Republic protects the environment, biodiversity and ecosystems in the interest of future generations, that state law regulates the ways and forms of animal protection and that private economic initiative cannot cause damage to health or the environment.
These changes certainly move toward strengthening environmental protection, understood as a common good to be preserved, but they fail to address the need to place the discussion on managing environmental and wildlife balances within a scientific perspective. Protecting biodiversity, in fact, requires concrete action, recognizing that a supposed self-regulation of nature is unrealistic. In this context, it is clear that a rigorously scientific and bias-free approach is essential .
"The idea of virtuous management of the land and its wildlife, according to scientific criteria, is one of the core values on which the Foundation's work is based," commented Maurizio Zipponi, President of the UNA Foundation . "The preservation of biodiversity and natural balances requires a rational approach from which we cannot deviate. Hunting must be placed within this context, framing the figure of the modern hunter as a qualified, responsible individual, in open opposition to poachers and all speciesist extremism that only creates damage to the ecosystemic relationship between humans, nature, and animals."
"Protecting our country's extraordinary biodiversity heritage necessarily requires a multidisciplinary approach that takes into account agricultural and forestry management, hunting, economic sustainability, and careful and ever-increasing scientific research. However, it cannot ignore legal and regulatory considerations," added Niccolò Sacchetti, President of AB-Agrivenatoria Biodiversitalia . " AB is proud to participate, along with the UNA Foundation and the Osservatorio contro le Agromafie, in this opportunity to discuss the need for an integrated approach to managing nature's balance."
The aim of the conference held in Rome, the first opportunity for discussion on the topic among the diverse worlds that have found a common forum for dialogue at the UNA Foundation, was to reflect on the importance of reading the constitutional text that recognizes the necessary role of human intervention in protecting natural balances, according to scientifically proven criteria. In addition to contributions from academics, the debate was enlivened by the participation of Coldiretti President Ettore Prandini, who, together with President Zipponi, engaged in dialogue on the topic with several parliamentarians from the relevant committees of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
FOUNDATION ONE
Through a new environmental chain, made up of sometimes contrasting realities, the UNA Foundation is committed to the protection and management of nature, contributing to the well-being of the community. In fact, environmentalist, agricultural and hunting realities converge in it, together with scientific and academic ones, which by sharing common objectives and collaborating around concrete projects, act synergistically towards the shared goal of creating a sustainable territorial and environmental context.
One of the foundations of the UNA Foundation is the protection of biodiversity through its active commitment to face and seek solutions to emergencies that threaten its balance, through the implementation of targeted activities and projects.
