Shortened season
With a joint letter, six of the seven recognized hunting associations present in Calabria, form a united front after the TAR ruling that significantly shortens the hunting season for song thrush, redwing and fieldfare. These are ANUUMigratoristi, Arci Caccia, Enalcaccia, Ente Produttori Selvaggina, Italcaccia and Associazione Nazionale Libera Caccia.
Turdids compromised
This is the text: “The ruling of the TAR Calabria came like a bolt from the blue, which, while rejecting most of the appeal to the 2024-2025 hunting calendar, has in fact reduced the hunting period from 30 to 9 January for song thrush, redwing and fieldfare throughout the region. The recognized associations consider it paradoxical and unjustifiable that the Calabria Region, through the competent department, did not deem it useful to inform them in time of the filing of this appeal to the TAR against the calendar. Going into the merits of the ruling that significantly compromises one of the hunting practices most felt by Calabrian hunters, let's say that it is the result of a very questionable opinion of ISPRA which, in drafting the Key Concepts years ago, put it in black and white that the aforementioned species begin their pre-nuptial migration in the first ten days of January".
The invitation to the Region
The joint statement adds: “We know that this is not true, indeed it is a scientific falsehood and all this is proven by other nations that overlook the Mediterranean basin that date the beginning of this migration on average one month later. Furthermore, the TAR should have taken into due consideration in its ruling that the opinion of ISPRA is not binding in the drafting of hunting calendars, but merely consultative. Given that in recent years the calendars have been written by the TAR (an entirely Italian anomaly) and that the damage has been done, this regional coordination forcefully asks Councilor Gallo to take a clear position in defense of the current hunting calendar and of all Calabrian hunters, promoting without any hesitation an appeal to the Council of State, giving timely notice to the coordination that we recall represents 6 recognized hunting associations".
