It has been extended, starting from today, by decree of the general director of the department Agriculture of Calabria Region, the effectiveness of the wild boar selection plan in Calabria. This was announced by the Department of Agriculture, led by Gianluca Gallo. «We found it necessary to foresee a further extension of the selection plan - explains Gallo - due to the significant increase in the ungulate population, which, in recent times, has caused considerable imbalances in the agro-forestry-pastoral ecosystem. It was quickly decided, therefore, to act to protect public safety and some specific production activities already severely hit by the pandemic crisis, such as farm holidays and intensively cultivated land ».
"The managerial provision - continues the note - it was adopted once the favorable opinion of Ispra was obtained, with validity for the period between May 2021 and May 2022. Ispra itself has recognized the effectiveness of the selection hunt in Calabria, having led to a 61% increase in wild boar harvesting compared to the previous season ». "The Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, also - specifies the Department -, has communicated that it considers the consistency and structure by sex and age classes to be acceptable from a technical point of view provided for in the plan drawn up by the competent regional offices, providing for the possibility that selectors can carry out interventions even at night, in order to maximize the likelihood of meeting animals and improve the efficiency of exits, particularly in critical areas, where impacts caused by the species on agricultural activities e the risks of road accidents appear to be more relevant».
«In this regard - concludes the note -, it should be emphasized that the Region has decided to extend the switching time of the selectors until 23.30 pm (for the summer period). The interventions, specifically, will be held on an area of 228.580 hectares, with the aim of cutting down 11 thousand heads, divided by sex and age class, favoring the removal of young and female specimens ».
