The growing presence and invasion of wild boars
The Reggio Calabria 1 Territorial Hunting Area has released this note on agricultural compensation: “In recent years, many farmers and agricultural associations have expressed concern regarding the lack of compensation for damages incurred due to the increasing presence and invasion of wild boars. This situation is not only frustrating, but highlights the inefficiency of public institutions in managing requests adequately”.
Significant economic repercussions
"The lack of compensation is not only a justice issue, but also has significant economic repercussions with consequences that are reflected not only on companies, but also on the entire agricultural community. This compensation procedure is established by the first paragraph of art. 26 of Law 157/1992 which, entitled (Compensation for damage caused by wild fauna and hunting activities), expressly establishes that: "to deal with damage not otherwise compensable caused to agricultural production and to works carried out on cultivated and grazing land of wild fauna, in particular protected fauna, and hunting activities, each region shall set up a fund for prevention and compensation, to which a percentage of the proceeds referred to in article 23 also flows".
Verification procedure
"It is important to underline, for clarification and for the knowledge of all farmers and related agricultural associations, that the role of the ATC is limited exclusively to providing technical support regarding the procedure for assessing damage caused by wild fauna, through the assistance of specific technicians (experts), without any competence regarding the aforementioned payments which remain exclusively the responsibility of the public bodies responsible as per the aforementioned national legislation. However, ATC RC1, due to the inertia of the institutions and within the limits of its own economic capacity, has advanced the aforementioned compensation to farmers for the years 2014 and 2015 without ever receiving the return, by the bodies, of the corresponding sums. In light of this situation, which unfortunately has been going on for years now, the undersigned ATC RC1 has recently deemed it appropriate to adopt drastic measures such as the decision to suspend the damage assessment activity".
