Calls: the varieties - Wood pigeon hunting
To improve the calls, to make them exceptional, functional for hunting, suitable for the situation, everything has really been done. No detail has been left to chance and the results available today are more than satisfactory. Sure, the good hunter of wood pigeon he is never satisfied, he seeks perfection, but in general the levels reached are very high.
Before even starting with the list of all the varieties of calls, it is important to make a clarification right away: the call must necessarily be functional to the type of hunting in which it will be used (and we will see that in the case of the wood pigeon there are several ). For this it is essential to keep in mind that it is very different to select a decoy as a laughingstock or as a flyer.
Having said that, let's closely analyze the varieties that, after careful selection, have become the most used and well-known lures, although, it must be said, the king in terms of lures is the pigeon by Amelia. Haven't you ever heard of it?
This pigeon, selected in Amelia, home of wood pigeon hunting, is a variety that has remained unsurpassed. Its size is medium, the wings are very strong and therefore it shines in flight, it is robust, resistant, but what makes it appreciated is above all its intelligence and the fact that it is a rather docile bird. It lends itself to training and its role and hunters like it. Its shape is typically elongated, its silver gray color, with long feathers, between 12 and 16. It normally has black feathers on the wing coverts and on the neck it shows shades ranging from gray to green, to purple and blue. The beak is short, the head is small and the eye is typically orange.
What makes Amelia's pigeon unique are the white insignia that can be seen on the wings. These are what make it very similar to the wood pigeon when it is in flight, and therefore infallible. Flight is one of the most appreciated characteristics of this pigeon. It is characterized by a strong, rhythmic and fast, but above all silent wing beat. In fact, the wings do not flap against each other and this guarantees a rather discreet departure and return.
Il French pigeon it is one of those cases in which beautiful does not necessarily correspond to good. The French pigeon is indisputably beautiful, with harmonic proportions, with a rather long body, a light gray color and without any strikethrough on the wings. Yet it is difficult to train, it does not have a good character and for this reason it is often used more than as a lure to improve morphology and color of specimens that are too dark or with too sharp streaks.
The Terni pigeon it is obtained directly from the Amelia and therefore quite similar. However, it is larger, sturdier and perhaps more intelligent, while maintaining the good flight skills of its parent. Among the Terni there are also the pigeons pintails, which do not go unnoticed because they have really long feathers and 14 and sometimes even 16 in number. FOLLOWS
