Cartridge .30-06 Sprg. - The preparation of shotguns for long-range shooting has become an interesting sector for many manufacturers who try their hand at short actions, long barrels and large diameter to achieve precision and accuracy of shot patterns at unusual lengths. One of the favorable components is the adoption of one cartridge whose intrinsic precision is well known, usually equipped with a medium length case: the .308 Win. and the Swedish 6,5 × 55 Mauser collect the majority of preferences for a very flexible use that also includes hunting, while the 6,5 × 47 Lapua or the 6 XC Norma are even more sophisticated and highly specialized versions. All this preamble to say how Remington felt a tidal wave in the thoughts of the shooters and with it the need to set up a Mod. 700 with a long castle for a Poker of cartridges among which none other than the .30-06 Sprg stands out. The availability of such a rifle led us to tests with different charges and one of these was particularly distinguished in its constancy and precision on the reduced, but still convincing, base of the 200 m: we are talking about the Fiocchi cartridge that we illustrate here in following.
The presentation
The dark green rigid cardboard box with thin vertical gray lines is enlivened by the red side band on which the GFL brand stands out; the writings indicate the category Extreme® Rifle Hunting therefore an accurate and specific level charge for hunting, loaded with the bullet Sierra® MatchKing which, if you really want to subtlety, would be suitable for competition shooting, but which from experiments on many occasions has proved to be very valid also for hunting, especially on chamois and roe deer, obviously in suitable calibers such as the .243 Win. eg. On the two lateral closing flaps and always in the characteristic red band, the caliber is shown and then below, in very large handwriting, the weight of the ball, here equal to 168 grs and again the wording M: King. An applause to these characters that definitely stand out on the background color and are also read by the armory shelves even by those with vision problems. Inside there is the red plastic hive that holds the charges, without letting them slip if by chance the box has been opened upside down, and equally does not offer an annoying resistance when picking them up. Small details that denote attention to a job well done.
The start of production of the Flakes cartridges as a long rifled gun, he followed a path that proved to be very wise: he relies on the most well-versed factories in each range of calibers to set up the cartridges, for example these are assembled in the Fiocchi factory in Fremont, Montana (USA), choosing always the most suitable components usually of own production or with the adoption of specific bullets, already well known on the market, such as this Match King of Sierra® which certainly needs no introduction. A policy that achieves the objectives of guaranteed yield and maintenance of affordable costs: in fact, the package we picked up at the New Armory of the Center of Alessandria was priced, at the beginning of November 2015, at € 32,00, a factor that puts it at an advantage. compared to many other competitors.
On the shooting counter
As always, our friend Carlo gives us a nice hand for the shooting tests and here we fire a verification shot at 50 m, finding how the development of Renato, co-owner of the armory, with the special device for the blank calibration is pretty much okay. Two shots at 100 m for a further check and then we move on to 200 m where these Fiocchi stand out: first of all we observe the brass of the cases of quality and high-class treatment, there are no dents or smudges on the collar, clear the seat of the primer always positioned to perfection. The bullets are a guarantee and, without dwelling on them, we are finally preparing to shoot.
The stowage in the fixed loader takes place without hitches as well as the chambering, both from the loader and directed with the fingers; closing the shutter requires a minimum effort and always the same sign that the measurements are correct and constant. The reaction to the shot is mitigated by the considerable weight of the weapon and the medium-light weight of the bullet, but the lack of that accentuated recoil sensation, present in many other loads of this caliber, is however appreciable. The resulting cases show the low and regular blackening of the collar, the priming with the constant trace of the firing pin and the normal flattening, signs of pressures within the right values and of an appreciable elasticity of the brass, a fact that will not fail. to arouse the attention of reloaders.
Ultimately these Bows they are very appreciable, we also repeat in the quotation, and the performances are completely adequate to the expectations of the hunter as well as those of the range shooter.
