The chamois census has taken place in recent days on the border between Belluno and Trento, therefore between Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige. Forest guards and hunters agreed that the number of animals is exponentially increasing, a trend that has lasted for some time, as well as the demonstration of presence of too many species in the territory in question. The Ministry of the Environment has asked for alternative forms of containment and the Veneto will try it thanks to an agreement between Coldiretti and regional farmers.
It is electrified fences and guard dogs, but other methods of protecting livestock are not excluded. Compensation to Veneto breeders by the Region in 2017 almost reached i 140mila euros due to the damage of predation. For this year, however, 200 thousand euros have been allocated, to be invested in fences and in the so-called "wildlife deterrents".
Compensation is viewed positively, but it is obvious how are not enough to solve the problem. There will be no wolf hunting, yet damage containment must be a priority. Finally, the chamois census will be useful in anticipation of the next ones plans to prepare as regards this species.
