Ideological aggression
“Once again we are witnessing an ideological attack against hunting and those who practice it, this time under the pretext of an illustrious guest. Donald Trump Jr. he participated in a legal and regulated activity, as thousands of hunters, both Italian and foreign, do every year, thus contributing to our wildlife and hunting heritage and to the economy of companies in the sector”. This was stated by Joe Formaggio, regional councilor of Fratelli d'Italia in Veneto.
The economic value
“Hunting is a significant economic driver for the territory,” says the councilor. “Hunting tourism, as evidenced by the data, is worth almost half a billion euros in Veneto alone and billions nationwide, bringing tangible benefits to our farms, accommodation facilities and an induced effect that goes well beyond the wildlife sector alone. Criminalizing those who participate in these activities is damaging to Veneto and Italy.” “And enough hypocrisy, hunting is a right and must be defended,” adds Formaggio. “It is not a crime, but a thousand-year-old tradition and an activity that follows strict rules, which are essential for the balance of the ecosystem. Those who today point the finger at Trump Jr. should remember that without hunting, many species would proliferate in an uncontrolled manner, causing enormous damage to agriculture and biodiversity. The real problem is the wave of animalist fanaticism that continues to hit the sector with prejudice and misinformation.”
Sectoral trend
“Trump Jr. has been the best sponsor of hunting in Veneto,” says the Fratelli d’Italia representative. “As I immediately said, Trump Jr. has given more publicity to our Veneto and its valley hunting tradition than all the others put together. Now that we also know the large amounts of money that come to Veneto from hunting tourism, we must protect it. Let’s not expose hunting in Veneto and the GDP that it creates to a witch hunt that could reverse the good trend of tourism. Let all the necessary investigations be done, but I would like to see the same speed and the same interest also for the real criminals. The message is clear: let’s not split hairs over a duck just because Trump was in the area.” “My wish,” concludes Joe Formaggio, “is that these people continue to come and spend their money in our region. Of the half a billion that American hunters spend in Italy, I hope that the majority is spent in Veneto. And Trump Jr. is our most important sponsor” (source: Regional Council of Veneto).
