Essential changes
While the Piedmont region, in addition to the ongoing control action carried out by the Provinces and the Metropolitan City of Turin, has approved two new provisions that authorize the selective culling of a further 14.630 wild boars within one year, Cia has reiterated its request that the next agricultural bill include those essential changes to law 157/92 that are deemed essential to combat the overpopulation of wild fauna and to ensure a balance between environmental protection and the economic sustainability of agricultural businesses.
A safer and more protected context
"The intervention in the national legislative seat - observes the provincial director of Cia Cuneo, Igor Varrone - is essential to allow local administrations to act more effectively in the containment of wild fauna. Farmers have the right to operate in a safer and more protected context, through clear and long-lasting regulatory, financial and structural tools. For this reason, it is necessary to be proactive in drafting the amendments, in the definition phase, to the now dated law on wild fauna and hunting, trusting in the willingness for dialogue shown by the Government".
Responsible and targeted management
In particular, Cia has called for three key interventions: widespread and concrete monitoring of wild fauna, with particular attention to excess species, in order to have updated data and effective tools for responsible and targeted management; a clear distinction between management activities and hunting activities, recognizing that the control of wild populations is a fundamental action for the protection of the sector and cannot be confused with traditional hunting practices. And, finally, full compensation for the damage suffered by farmers, in full compliance with the principle of responsibility, ensuring that those who suffer economic losses can receive adequate and timely compensation.
