“The new control and containment measures for ungulates put in place by The Tuscan Regional Authority, by strengthening the guidelines for the provincial police, they go in the right direction, even if, as repeated many times, much more is needed, because the emergency caused by wild animals is now chronic and not solvable if not with decisive interventions and with courageous choices. Nor should we underestimate, indeed prevent, the threat of swine fever which in the North West regions is already causing considerable damage to the sector. Prevention is needed in order not to disperse the regional pig herd, including native breeds and not to get to the restrictions on traffic in the woods as is already happening elsewhere ".
To underline it is Luke Brunelli, president Cia Italian Farmers of Tuscany, following the guidelines approved today by Regional Council which regulate the tasks of the provincial police divided on the basis of criteria that take into account the structural characteristics of each province and the metropolitan city of Florence. In particular - explains the note from the Tuscany Region -, the guidelines provide for greater control of ungulates in agriculture; that in urban areas, capture traps are preferred and, finally, that intervention in defense of their breeding is favored by owners or owners of land with a hunting license.
"There is a need for environmental sustainability to be everyone's need - adds Brunelli -, more courage is needed, in the choices and actions to be carried out. We can no longer speak of an emergency, it is now an ordinary situation. It is the result of wrong legislative choices over the years, we can no longer afford to talk about conservation but about wildlife management and this applies to all species (wild boars, all ungulates, corvids).
It is necessary to modify the Law 157, to have the courage and the political strength to address the issue with new tools, not continuing to delegate only to hunters, who alone cannot make it even for smaller numbers than in the past. We need to think about withdrawals with innovative tools, consequently imagine new methods for achieve this. Tuscany must tighten itself and resolve this situation. There is no agriculture that can guarantee income if we do not solve some problems, including the faunal problem ”concluded Brunelli.
