African swine fever
“We ask for the containment of wild boars due to damage to crops, but also due to the potential danger of transmission of swine fever.” The request to Umbria Region is that of the president of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani dell'Umbria Matteo Bartolini to allow actions to contain wild boars, once the hunting calendar has closed, thanks to regional policies that protect agricultural activity and health prevention following the objectives of the national plan and of environmental protection. “An indispensable and no longer postponable measure requested by many agricultural entrepreneurs”.
The number of killings per year
According to the provisions of the Extraordinary Commissioner for African swine fever, a number of 44 thousand culls per year are expected for Umbria, of which 10 thousand in selection and 10 thousand in containment. “An objective that is difficult to achieve today - continues Bartolini -, considering the regional data on requests for intervention by farmers and the number of animals killed through containment and selection”.
Protection of livestock
The excessive presence of wild boars, in fact, determines a highly negative picture for economic activities linked to the agricultural and livestock world. Containing the number of wild boars in the area will determine the fight against damage to agriculture, but also prevent infections and protect pig farms. The problem also concerns the city where there are numerous sightings of these large mammals near urban centers and there is the risk of causing road accidents, as happened in recent days in Folignate (Source CIA).
