CIA Umbria: "The attacks of wolves are increasingly aggressive"

The association called for urgent interventions in light of the latest complaints and the worrying number of the population of these animals (over two thousand).

After thealarm launched in Piedmont and in the Marches, wolves are also causing concern in a neighboring region, theUmbria. The last appeal of the local section of the Italian Confederation of Farmers (CIA) it is eloquent, the animals no longer seem willing to stop and are continuing to prey on the countryside in the absence of any obstacle against them. The association has collected an increasing number of complaints and reports from producers and breeders who have been affected by these attacks, dangerous for agricultural crops but also and above all for their safety and their families. One of the latest attacks took place in the territory of Passignano sul Trasimeno, in the province of Perugia.

The CIA Umbria recalled in its official statement the most unfortunate last episodes and on this occasion it returned to propose specific initiatives to the competent authorities, in order to stem the phenomenon and, more generally, to contain the wildlife in the region (the reference to wild boars is clear). The main complaint concerns the fact that the answers provided so far are not effective and that the drama experienced by agriculture is experienced in a detached and even indifferent way by those who should instead implement damage containment and prevention strategies.

As pointed out by the confederation, Umbrian wolves tend to strike the livestock farms located in the most marginal areas of this territory, those in which there are prestigious farms, such as Chianina cattle and Apennine sheep. The main economic damages are recorded in places such as Umbertide, San Venanzo, Pietralunga and the whole Val Nerina. The hope is that the authorities that are competent in this area will be able to take note of the most recent data as soon as possible, which have also been disseminated by authoritative and followed newspapers.

We are talking about a population of wolves in the Apennines higher than two thousand units, a completely different situation compared to that of a few decades ago. In the past the wolf was an endangered species and therefore had to be protected, nowadays we need to reflect on the new needs. The Ministry of the Environment has drawn up a document with which it will be possible to introduce an exemption for the capture of wild animals in excess. However, the CIA Umbria expects that before this intervention, the damaged farmers will be compensated at 100% and solutions will be studied that can be applied both in the region and in the neighboring ones (Marche and Tuscany) to try to eliminate or significantly reduce the phenomenon.
