Epidemic to be fought
In 2024, 57 outbreaks of avian influenza were recorded in Veneto. In order to combat the epidemic, Cia-Italian Farmers Veneto proposes an integrated plan that includes the strengthening of biosecurity in farms (already of high quality), active and passive monitoring and preventive vaccinations for laying hens and turkeys. "We need to act on multiple fronts - explained the president of Cia Veneto, Gianmichele Passarini, during a meeting on the topic organized by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie - to reduce any risk".
The first experimental phase
Before presenting the vaccination plan to the Ministry of Health, he specified, “it will be necessary to define the areas where this preventive action will allow a real benefit to the poultry system”. The first, experimental phase will concern 5.000 turkeys; after which all the implications related to the vaccine itself will be studied. According to the roadmap, the vaccination plan will be fully operational by 2026.
Potential contagions
“This is only a first step, which will be followed by further meetings,” Passarini added. “In any case, the integrated program will allow us to minimize potential infections.” “We are ready to take action so that the Ministry finances the plan with adequate resources. The steering committee will be the responsibility of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie, an international center of excellence in terms of prevention and research” (CIA).
