Holes along the banks
“More resources are needed, not one-off funding, to eradicate coypus from our territory”. Cia-Agricoltori Italiani Veneto supports the initiative announced by the regional administration, namely the total elimination of beavers from the plain areas: in addition to devastating dozens of hectares of agricultural plots, especially those dedicated to corn (with losses of up to 30% of the harvest), they make holes along the banks in which they make their dens. “With the first heavy rain everything comes down - specifies the president of Cia Veneto, Gianmichele Passarini -. Of course, flooding occurs afterwards. Before safeguarding the flora and fauna, a concept that is now outdated, the banks must be made safe. Also to save human lives from potential flooding of rivers and canals”. Cia Veneto also recalls that there is a regional plan for the eradication of coypus.
No results obtained
“However - Passarini himself specifies - up to now it has not brought the hoped-for results because adequate contributions have not been put in place. Only, in fact, countermeasures that look more like palliatives. Today, as the Region claims, we can no longer wait”.
Amendment of the law
In any case, for years Cia Veneto has been vigorously fighting to modify law 157 of 1992, “Rules for the protection of wild fauna”: in the current context it is necessary to go beyond the principle of protection to reach that of its correct management. “We will continue to keep the attention high on the issue - concludes the president -. Coypu, together with wild boars, devastate crops, with very serious consequences in terms of profitability for agricultural entrepreneurs. And they jeopardize the already delicate hydrogeological system of the plain” (source: CIA).
