A dangerous increase
The population of bears in Trentino has doubled in the last ten years (+100%) with an estimated presence now of over a hundred specimens that endanger the safety of citizens, tourists and farms. This is what Coldiretti says in reference to the capture of the Jj4 bear responsible for the killing of the 26-year-old runner from Trentino Andrea Papi. The fear therefore remains for the presence of other specimens in freedom in the Trentino area where the proliferation of large predators represents a serious risk for the safety of people but also - underlines Coldiretti - for economic activities, from agriculture to tourism.
Area differences
In recent years - underlines Coldiretti - there has been an increase in the presence of bears in Trentino with an increase also in the area occupied by individual young males who have been reported as far as Piedmont, in the border areas between Tyrol and Bavaria and in Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the basis of the annual reports drawn up by the large carnivores sector of the Wildlife Service of the Autonomous Province of Trento.
The presence of wolves
The runner's case represents the tip of the iceberg of an out-of-control situation where the resistance of those who work and live in the area - Coldiretti denounces - is now at the limit considering that there are also 26 packs of wolves or hybrids in circulation in Trentino (they were 17 in 2020) with intrusions into companies and farms. Responsibility is therefore needed in the defense of the population who - concludes Coldiretti - courageously continue to preside over the territory and to guarantee the beauty of the landscape, against degradation and abandonment.
