The situation relating to the presence of the wolf in the Piedmont area has now reached the degree of saturation, so much so that of the 46 flocks and 5 pairs over the entire Alpine population surveyed, according to data from Life Wolf Alps, in Piedmont there are 33 herds and 2 pairs. In the face of a more recent survey illustrated by the Regional Vice-President Fabio Carosso last month, it would be estimated a population of between 450 and 500 wolves when in the whole of France they are altogether about 550. At the national level, the wolf population hosted is considerable: about 10% compared to the European level. “After reaching the threshold of extinction in the 70s - points out Roberto Moncalvo, Confederal Delegate of Coldiretti Cuneo - the wolf population is now rapidly expanding to the point of jeopardizing the very reason why its presence is important: maintaining biodiversity.
With these numbers, that cause a situation that is truly at the limit, in fact, the functionality of ecosystems is put at risk by causing a ecological imbalance. Therefore, a new Wolf Plan based on an innovative management model is urgently needed, for this reason it is necessary to continue with the work started by Vice President Carosso at the State-Regions Conference, in harmony with what neighboring countries are already doing, like France.
Furthermore, it is urgent to issue clear legislation with respect to the management and definition of hybrids that cause significant damage being, moreover, far more numerous than wolves, and which, however, must be addressed with specific and adequate measures. " "We remember - concludes Fabiano Porcu, Director of Coldiretti Cuneo - that not only the safety of livestock and agricultural work is at stake, but also the protection of the safety of those who live in our mountains and hills, with the multiplication of sightings and predations even at low altitude so that the wolves have now arrived at the gates of the cities ".
SORRY IT IS NOT THE CASE THAT THE WOLF SPECIES IS REMOVED FROM PARTICULARLY PROTECTED SPECIES ??????
