Charles Signorelli, Chairman of the Mountain Community of Valsassina, Valvarrone, Val d'Esino and Riviera (in the province of Lecco), spoke during the hearing of the Eighth Commission of the Lombardy region. As he pointed out in his report, the damage caused by wildlife and in particular by wild boars is very serious, so the Region should take great care.
The recommended recipe is not only that of cages and selective killing, but also ofincreased compensation, investments in fences in sensitive areas and analytical data collection. Already at the end of July a motion had been presented by Signorelli to ask for suitable measures and contain the species. According to the president, the trap system worked, given that there were over 100 catches with 10 cages in 2016 alone in the Lecco area.
Now, however, we should add night hunting, a solution to which we combine a greater use of selecontrollers, licensed hunters able to increase the number of interventions and killing. Signorelli finally said he was convinced that the territory of the Lombard mountain community is not suitable for withstanding the presence of wild boars, consequently more effective technical solutions are needed than those implemented up to now.
