An urgent problem
“Our association believes that at the moment we should talk in general about the 'ungulates' problem (therefore wild boars and roe deer) to focus on the most urgent problem in the Asti area, even if the management of all wild fauna represents the real issue to be addressed” , thus begins Gabriele Baldi, president of Asti Agriculture. And he continues: "The pressure exerted by the heads of these species on the cultivated agricultural territory, and not only that, finding their presence also in urban territory and on the entire road network, is excessive, proving extremely harmful as well as truly dangerous."
Spread of ASF
“Protests in various forms with more or less impact, meetings with prefectures and administrations at all levels, requests for army intervention, commissioner coordination following the serious spread of African Swine Fever... we could continue with a long list of activities carried out by all (sometimes united, often in no particular order, thinking more about their own image than about actually pursuing common goals), activities which unfortunately have a common denominator: results that are often not very tangible but, let me say, sometimes also poorly communicated and/or or recognized”, says Mariagrazia Baravalle, director of the Asti organisation, with a bit of discouragement.
Roe deer containment plan
And he adds: "In summary, there are issues that must be addressed and defined at a national level once and for all with streamlined rules that can then be implemented without obstacles at a local level: an example for all is the plan to contain roe deer in the South of Asti, of which Confagricoltura was the only signatory to the request, recently blocked by an appeal to the TAR presented by an environmentalist association... so we're not going anywhere! In this way the agricultural economy is heavily penalized and people's safety is put at risk, all sacrificed on the altar of an ideological war often carried out by those who do not really live in the territory but practice environmentalism from their living room... or let's say... from their garden" .
Wild boar slaughter
A final comment in unison: "A lot has been done in the Asti area by the provincial administration, in collaboration with the ATC, and we cannot fail to recognize the number of wild boar culls carried out (in some areas the pressure has actually dropped), but it is still not enough either in quantitative terms or in terms of homogeneity of territorial coverage. For roe deer, however, which are mainly concentrated in some areas of southern Asti, a change of pace is absolutely necessary and the stop following the appeal certainly does not help" (source: Confagricoltura).
