An important anniversary
On the afternoon of Wednesday 26 October, on the occasion of 45th anniversary of FACE, an important conference of the Biodiversity, Hunting & Country-Side intergroup was held in Brussels on the new management opportunities for European birdlife. The numerous speakers present at the event and the exponents of the most important hunting associations at European level followed one another by expressing interventions and debates at the level, through which critical issues and solutions were examined to improve the conservation status of some species in order to guaranteeing collection over time. Particularly appreciated by the participants, the intergroup president Alvaro Amaro and the Vice president Alex Agius Saliba, addressed to the defense of the hunting world.
Monitoring of migratory species
Likewise, the President of the Federation Nationale des chasseurs, Nicolas Rivet, excellently exposed the work and investments put in place by French hunters, both in the monitoring of migratory species via GPS and nocturnal censuses, and for the environmental improvements carried out for the benefit of vulnerable species such as turtle dove and gray partridge. More rigid is the position of the representatives of BirdLife and the European Commission, who have supported the need for a temporary closure of the hunting for some species whose populations have undergone a significant decrease in numbers at European level over time.
The words of MEP Casanova
Satisfied with what was debated during the meeting, MEP Massimo Casanova, who in his note declared “What emerged highlights for the umpteenth time how central and decisive is the role of hunters in the management and simultaneous protection of habitats and species; if Europe requires us to follow the management plans for vulnerable species, it is necessary that the member states entrust their management to our category, which not only knows the needs in biological and environmental terms, but has always spent itself in voluntary and free environmental improvement activities, resulting in the benefit of the whole community "(source: FIDC).
