Containment of the virus
With reference to the recent cases of African swine fever (ASF) in the wild boar carcasses found in various municipalities in the province of Reggio and in the province of Salerno, the Umbria Region announces that it has maintained constant monitoring of the situation within the region, through a series of initiatives that have made it possible to contain the spread of the virus which unfortunately has not yet been eradicated.
Serious setbacks
In the face of the latest events that testify to the worsening of the situation in other regions, it is therefore necessary to maintain high attention and raise awareness among citizens on the subject. ASF is not transmitted from animals to humans but could lead to very serious repercussions on animal health and on the pig sector up to completely blocking local production.
How to behave
What is the citizen to do? Do not leave waste or food on the ground or even near the dumpsters because, as demonstrated, they attract wild boars and potentially (e.g. cured meats) can be a vehicle for the transmission of the disease.
Disinfect your shoes when leaving agricultural or wooded areas. The virus present in the soil could be found in the shoes.
Report the presence of dying wild boars or their carcasses.
Who should you contact? Citizens who come across dead wild boars should contact 07581391. For further information and to consult national and regional provisions, consult the page https://www.regione.umbria.it/-/peste-suina (source: FIDC) .
