The initiative of the hunters
A census on the depredations of dogs by wolves has recently started, an unprecedented initiative (it is the first time it has been carried out at a national level) promoted by the Federcaccia Hunters Coordination. The census is based on completing a questionnaire, available online at the following link https://bit.ly/QuestionarioSullaPredazione and at the end of which the data will be presented to the Ministry of the Environment. The increase in wolves is well known, yes estimates that in recent years the percentage of the increase in wolf population and 87% (source COPA/COGEA which carried out a study on the wolf population in the period 2021-2022).
More and more frequent sightings
According to the Ispra report, however, there are around 3600 Italian wolves without taking into account the hybrids, which now represent a very large portion of the species. The effects of the presence of the wolf are there for all to see. From the increasingly frequent sightings even near inhabited centers, to the predictions of livestock and domestic animals. In fact, the episodes in which the wolf's prey become dogs, whether they are hunting aids or not, are on the increase. Hence the need for precise and reliable data collection on the issue, which will also be carried out thanks to the precious contribution of the Federcaccia Study and Research Centre, and which will see numerous Italian Regions active. We therefore invite all those who, in spite of themselves, have found themselves losing their auxiliary for this reason, to fill out the questionnaire or to contact the Regional Coordinator Elisa Mazzei at the email [email protected] and participate in the survey!
A conference at EOS
The collected data will then be sent to the Ministry of the Environment. Finally, we remind you that the Coordination will organize together with Federcaccia Nazionale in Verona, on the occasion of EOS l, a conference on the wolf in which Dr. Giorgia Romeo of the Federcaccia Study and Research Center and Professor Paolo Ciucci of the Sapienza University of Rome will participate. Furthermore, on 23 January at 20 a broadcast will be broadcast on the dedicated channel of Sky di Caccia on the theme of wolf predation in which Isabella Villa, responsible for Coordination, took part (source: FIDC).
