Protection of agricultural activity
"African swine fever and damage caused by wild animals: these are some of the serious problems that farmers in the Novara area are forced to face and with respect to which the Province of Novara, as far as its own competences are concerned, is also moving both by maintaining close contact with trade associations and also by interfacing with the Piedmont Region with respect to directives and initiatives to be implemented in the territories to support and protect agricultural activity”. The councilor delegated to Relations with Agricultural Bodies and Associations and Hunting and Fishing of the Province of Novara Giuseppe Maio makes this premise in the presentation of the actions undertaken in recent months.

“Just last February 11th – continues the councilor – I was invited to participate in the public meeting 'Let's discover the cards' organized in Oleggio by Coldiretti Novara and Vco – and I thank the director Luciano Salvadori, the president Fabio Toffi with Paolo Favini and all the members of the association's board for the invitation – which was a further opportunity, in addition to the meetings organized by the Province with all the representative interlocutors of the sector, to listen directly to about two hundred farmers from Novara present and discuss with them the difficulties that pig farms are facing due to Psa, a disease that is causing huge economic losses. Another crucial problem is the increase in damage caused by wild boars, which destroy crops and put farmers' safety at risk”.

"Fortunately, the institutions and territorial bodies responsible for the matter are present, from the provincial game wardens and the Novara ATC, to the Novara ASL, to the regional commissioner Giorgio Sapino, to the management body of the Ticino and Lake Maggiore Park. We are achieving significant results in containing the number of wild boars, in the awareness that the situation is complex, especially due to the rigid procedures provided for by the national Psa protocol which appears too stringent in its application. However, during the meetings with the territorial agricultural trade associations Coldiretti, Confagricoltura and Cia, we reiterated our determination to find solutions to support operators, companies in the sector and pig farmers to overcome this difficult moment. We have also already discussed, providing data regarding the direct activity for which the Province is competent, numerous other problems that concern the management of all wild fauna, including deer, crows and fish-eating birds. Trusting in the widest collaboration and constant comparison between the various interested territorial subjects – concludes the councilor – we have already implemented and will continue to implement real solutions that can satisfy the various needs expressed by farmers and breeders of the Novara area” (source: Province of Novara).
