A controversial choice
Coldiretti Turin representatives did not vote on the budgets of the Territorial Hunting Areas and Alpine Districts for 2024. Coldiretti Turin and the other provincial federations of the agricultural union are protesting the Piedmont Region's decision to pay only 83% of the amount of wildlife damage for 2024. Coldiretti sits on almost all the boards of these organizations, which are legally responsible for wildlife management, representing the interests of agriculture.

"Abstention on budgets is an extreme act that we would never have wanted to adopt - notes the president of Coldiretti Torino, Bruno Mecca Cici and regional vice president with responsibility for wild fauna - But we are really fed up. ATC and CA integrate the regional contribution with just 10% of their own resources. The result is that compensation for damages from wild boars is missing 17% of the damages ascertained, that is, due". In recent days, the Region approved the allocation of 3.604.844,99 euros for damages in 2024, a compensation that is, in fact, just 83% of the damages assessed, quantified in a total of 4.639.293,72 euros.

For this reason, the representatives of Coldiretti Torino will continue to use abstention as a method of union struggle to obtain what is due to agricultural companies. According to data from the Region, in 2024 the requests for compensation for damage to crops in Piedmont were 4.379 for an amount. The damage was caused for approximately 70% by wild boars, 12% by ruminant ungulates, 9% by crows and the remainder by other animal species. The most frequent types of damage are the destruction of clods (over 14 thousand hectares) and the destruction of the finished product (4,5 thousand hectares), for a total loss of product quantified at 177 thousand quintals throughout Piedmont. The most affected province is that of Turin with 54 thousand quintals of product lost in 2024. The compensations are paid to the ATC, CA, Provinces and Metropolitan City of Turin, the bodies that manage the investigations and in turn transfer the sums to the damaged agricultural companies (source: Coldiretti).
