Scientific research
It seems like an eternity has passed, but in reality it's only three and a half years. The covid-19 pandemic has spread throughout the world since March 2020 and today it is a little less scary, even if some scientific studies do not allow us to sleep completely peacefully. In particular, what is worrying is the research published in the journal “Nature Communications” which focused attention on role of deer.
Cells and receptors
It was immediately understood that some animals were vehicles of infection for the coronavirus and ungulates are part of this list. The virus, in fact, binds to cells via a receptor and that of deer is very similar to the human one. However, experts did not focus on the white-tailed species for this reason alone.
Not simple monitoring
The problem lies in the fact that deer transmit a good quantity of viral particles to their peers, therefore the contagion can register significant numbers. These animals, then, are used to approaching urban centers without problems (North America first and foremost), putting humans at risk with possible infections. This is why monitoring should be done with the utmost attention and even more so in the future.
