The famous revolving blade hunting knife has recently been refurbished by EKA, a prestigious Swedish company that has served the Royal Court of Sweden for centuries. The current version, EKA Swingblade G3, was developed in collaboration with Swedish Professional Hunters. The strong point of this interesting accessory remains the possibility of having two fixed blades at the same time in the same tool, one for skinning and one for gutting. The blades alternate, rotating around the central fulcrum, simply by pressing the central button.
The blades of the Swingblade G3 are made of Sandvik 12C27 steel, brought to a hardness of 59 HRC, a guarantee of truly exceptional strength and edge hold. The classic blade has a length of 10 cm with a thickness of about 3 mm. The upper part has a concavity for the thumb which facilitates the grip and pressure of the finger while working.
The skinner blade has a length of 8 cm and has a rounded and blunt tip, ideal for not risking to puncture the organs during evisceration. The ventral part has a knurled concavity to accommodate the thumb and increase grip. The handle of the Swingblade G3 is very ergonomic to favor the perfect grip with both blades and is made of Proflex ™, a synthetic material with a non-slip grip.
Three versions of the Swingblade G3 are available: one with a black handle and two with high visibility colors (orange and yellow), very useful during use in low light conditions.
The Swingblade G3 comes with a practical black cordura sheath and a lanyard that can be attached to the knife thanks to the hole on the back of the handle. The sheath features a belt attachment and can accommodate the knife with the blade positioned in either position. The EKA Swingblade G3 knife is available in the best armories or can be ordered online on the site www.coltellidacaccia.com.
The test
This is the first time I have used a revolving knife. I cannot deny my preconceived doubts in terms of solidity and practicality of use. I am very happy to have been proved wrong: the EKA Swingblade G3 is solid, compact and easy to handle. The fluidity with which the blades alternate is guaranteed by the precise rotation system, which can be easily activated by pressing the central button. The main blade has the right length to work a rake and holds the edge exceptionally. The concavity that accommodates the thumb is very useful. With a simple movement we move on to the skinner blade. The latter was very useful not only in evisceration but also in skinning the limbs without damaging the meat.
The synthetic material of the handle provides an optimal grip even with wet hands. The concavities that accommodate the thumb and forefinger in the use of both blades are very functional during work. Personally I recommend to discard the black version and prefer the two high visibility colors, orange or yellow; we know that use often occurs in hours with low light. To conclude I can say that the use of the Swingblade G3 in the field demonstrates how EKA has turned to real hunters and that this revolving blade knife can really meet the needs of the ungulate hunter.
