Il Green Europe Group presented today in the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia Romagna region a question to the Regional Council to ask for clarification on the work of hunters whose activity dedicated to hunting wild boars has recently been equated with "Public utility activities", both the activation of rigorous controls to avoid gatherings and the collective hunting of wild boar in hunt inevitably entails with relative risks for the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, and, finally, documented evidence about the period of spread of African Swine Fever in Emilia-Romagna.
The question by Europa Verde is inspired by the latest measures taken by the Emilia-Romagna Region, after consulting the Prefecture of Bologna, which authorized the green light to wild boar hunting considered as “public service and / or public utility activities”, allowing hunters both to act in groups and to move between municipal boundaries, even if they are in different regions. The reasons behind the authorization, in addition to the need to deal with African Swine Fever, were the road accidents caused by wild boars and the damage they cause to agriculture. The councilor for agriculture and agri-food, hunting and fishing Alessio Mammi confirmed that the hunters who carry out the wild boar wildlife control plans are equated to a public service.
For this reason the Region, as a form of prevention of the spread of African Swine Fever, with effect from November 19, it has ordered an exception to the travel limitations provided for by the DPCM of November 3, 2020 for all hunters who hunt wild boar in all its forms - selection, shot and hunted - both in the territorial hunting areas (ATC) and in the Wildlife Hunting Companies. "The councilor's response did not bring the required documented evidence on the existence of a real alarm of the spread of African Swine Fever in Emilia-Romagna - declares Silvia Zamboni, Group Leader of Europa Verde and Vice President of the Legislative Assembly - Furthermore, when hunting is used means that the prevention activities have been skipped.
In fact, the prevention strategy focuses on information to stakeholders, on biosecurity control and passive surveillance aimed at supervising the entry of sick animals into Italy. I hope that on the part of the councilorship there is a commitment to also consider the problem of the safety of citizens. In my question, I cited some cases reported in the local press that report the presence of hunters running around on agricultural land and shooting, creating situations of inconvenience for citizens exposed to the risk of being injured by shot missing from ammunition. It is a problem that must be faced and solved once and for all, because we cannot force people to barricade themselves in the house to escape the shootings that define the far west "(Piacenza).
