Strasbourg, 8 May – “Satisfaction for the outcome of a battle that I have always supported in Europe and on the territory, and which today finally comes to fruition also thanks to the vote of the League. After the modification of the Bern Convention on the degree of protection of the wolf, today the European Parliament ratified the downgrading of the predator from a 'strictly protected' species to a 'protected' species.
This change will allow for wolf containment measures that were previously prohibited, as previous legislation did not allow for any culling even in cases of significant disturbance to human activity.
This is a historic turning point, which will contribute to a greater balance between the protection of wildlife and the survival of human activities, particularly in mountain areas, allowing us to protect not only residents and tourists, but also agriculture and livestock farming, threatened by the uncontrolled proliferation of wolves, which in the last three years have preyed on almost 9.000 heads of livestock, causing huge economic and psychological damage to farmers and families, without considering the encroachment of wolves into residential areas, where, from 2017 to today, around twenty attacks on humans have occurred.
An alarming situation, culpably ignored by some animal rights groups, which has required the adoption of the emergency procedure by the European Parliament, in order to intervene with due promptness to safeguard the mountain communities and the economic activities present”.
This was stated in a note by Lega MEP Isabella Tovaglieri.
