In recent days FACE, the Federation of European hunting associations, joined, together with Copa-Cogeca, CEJA and ELO, to a joint declaration on the increase in conflicts between the large carnivores in Europe, which highlights the most pressing issues for each sector and defines clear political demands. For the European hunting community the issues are as varied as being excluded from decision making after years of successful management or the impact on game populations given by the high density of large carnivores or the loss of precious hunting dogs.
Due to recent demands for stricter protection, the lack of clear conservation objectives and unheard requests from rural actors, the degree of social tolerance of large carnivores has reached its limit or is decreasing in many areas of Europe. To ensure the long-term conservation of large European carnivores an active and flexible management of many populations will be needed, which promotes social acceptance and successful coexistence.
Torbjorn Larsson, President of FACE, declared: "This declaration reinforces FACE's position with respect to the Habitats Directive and its provisions for the conservation of large carnivores, i.e. the urgent need for greater flexibility and to adapt the level of protection of the species when a strong recovery of populations is documented (use of 19, Habitats Directive). To be clear, it is about using the existing provisions within the Habitats Directive, not rewriting it".
