It is easy to talk about FAIR because the first emphasis to be placed in the description of this company concerns the production of over-and-under for which the Marcheno factory ranks second behind those who are easy to imagine and in first place in the manufacture of parallels.
The industrialization entrusted to the most modern and sophisticated numerical control machinery allows the extremely precise realization of the details that make up a shotgun, speeding up the assembly that practically does not require further manual retouching. Even the appearance of the surfaces and edges is already adequate for assembly, saving a considerable amount compared to that necessary if still many operations were to be performed manually. We must underline how the classic weapon executed with traditional methods still retains an unparalleled charm with the reverse of the medal made by the affordable cost by a number of buyers almost as small as the righteous of Sodom. It is necessary to see in every variation dictated by the times how favorable there is, knowing full well that some factors will be a little apart in favor of a greater diffusion of the product: in essence and in the present situation, a proposal such as this one carried by the Iside Vintage thanks to which even young hunters, many desires and little money, together with enthusiasts of all ages will be able to reach the side-by-side with external dogs.
This type of shotgun represents in the hunting imagination the sublime ideal of the Hunter, the one with a capital C, which in our lands is combined with native dogs such as spinoni or Italian bracchi. Not that kurzhaar and breton, pointer and setter are to be left at home, far from it, but the image encoded in the mind by many photographs or vintage prints thus represents "our" hunter. So let's take a closer look at this polite side-by-side shotgun well endowed with class and character.
FAIR Isis Vintage. The choice of the 20/76 caliber
We would immediately like to say about the many aspects deriving from targeted and thoughtful choices: the character we have mentioned derives precisely from thinking about the details, each delegated to a technical function combined with another aesthetic, with the overall harmony that emanates from a work well conducted. The choice of the caliber conditions everything favorably: preparing the shotgun for the 20/76 you immediately have a slenderness inherent in the reduced diameter of the barrels compared to the traditional 12 gauge and this is a first, considerable step in aesthetics as in functionality because today loads of the cadet caliber arrive, with the 70 mm cartridge case, 32-33 g of shot, while with the 76 mm one it is close to 40 g. We find optimal for all hunting the proposals of the primary houses with 30-31 g equipped with a high initial speed, mediating recoil, availability in the armory and cost: we seem to hear one of our teachers who warned not to add cabbage, carrots and potatoes ... , but hunters will perceive on the fly (a very relevant term) the sum of the real and practical advantages. If we then lower ourselves to the usual limits of a few tens of years ago, 24-26 g it will be possible to verify how the correctness in directing the shot, both for the aim and for the distance, will give very satisfying results. Having said the necessary of ballistics, let's focus on the details of the receiver and the firing mechanisms.
FAIR Isis Vintage. The mechanics and the salient solutions
The integral action is obtained by milling operations from a solid forged steel: the additions of some components such as chromium and nickel contribute to making the metal workable more easily and quickly while, with the subsequent thermochemical steps, they will provide a mass with the necessary surface hardness supported by an equally important toughness for durability. The classic form sees the table elongated and contained in width, head with round but very flattened breasts to which the chalices supporting the strikers lean back, tapered at the bottom to form the reinforcements side subjected to the planes of the pipes. The sides of the action are smooth, moved by the scratch that borders the front seat of the plate ending in a round arch; further ahead, the convexity of the barrel rotation pivot cover just protrudes. The two side plates show a reduced height, and therefore a rather closed rear arch, giving impetus to the whole: the fixing, in addition to the intuitive joints, requires a single screw inserted in the left folder with a blind stop in the right one.
The dogs of refined style with a certain hint of Greener have the middle parts of the body, back and chest united in what we can define a stylized C, while the vertical neck, head, horizontal neck and crest are enclosed in a V placed above the bottom. The verticality of the ridges ensures a firm grip of the thumb even in the final part of the arching stroke when the piece assumes an inclined position of about 45 °. Good fluidity in the armament and the sonority of the mechanisms, the leaf springs are always of pleasant effect; the rebound of the dogs is reassuring, as well as the sensitivity of the shots, about 1450 g for the first trigger and 1660 for the second, and the promptness in percussion are shown to be completely adequate. The guard obtained from a slightly spartan sheet has a correct oval: the guard is absent, the costs force some renunciation, and the angle with the handle should avoid the hammering of the middle finger. Nothing to complain about the shape of the two triggers, in assonance with the style of a side-by-side.
FAIR Isis Vintage. Rods, seals and closures group
Always interesting to observe how the junction of the two barrels is made, worked separately and finished in the breech with a round section. The complementary piece is therefore the solid wood from which the two tenons and half-tops are obtained, creating what in the company is defined as a plate sleeve to which the barrels are welded. In the first tenon the front semicircular recess for attachment to the rotation pin stands out, while the rear arched profile shows the shim mark against the slide. In the second tenon the flat and inclined profile is evident which rests on the intermediate plinth obtained in the recess of the table, unloading the pin from the thrust under shot: in both then you can see the mortises with slightly rounded profiles where the closing gusset of a classic double Purdey is inserted.
The movement is ensured by the key with integral pin inserted in the tilting head: the shape has a smooth pin head, an elongated and sectioned body. attractively convex, the rounded and perforated button. Perhaps the position on the upper tail of the receiver is a bit high, but it is negligible veniality. Considering the manual extraction system, a perfectly correct choice for this shotgun, brings us back to the barrel group by noting the sturdy one-piece extractor with the deep grip bevels on the reliefs of the cartridge bottoms: the fluid and smooth movement is ensured by the cylindrical shank placed between the barrels which, when lowered, put it in contrast with the tooth inserted in the receiver hinge. A second rod, parallel and above the shank, guarantees the position and correct sliding of the piece.
FAIR Isis Vintage. The kick and a comment
A grade 2 walnut dresses Vintage in a suitable way: everything in its place and at its moment so the log used for the stock and the piece used for the shaft, give a very appreciable seriousness of appearance with the right veins, stretched longitudinally, mineralized and dense vessels, compact texture, color and oil finish in harmony with the style of the whole. Traditional lines that ensure quick grip and consequent instinctive alignment of the eye, rib, viewfinder and target; rod with prismatic section at the base, then tapered up to the rounded apex where the release button obtained with the pump mechanism protrudes. The laser allows many fantasies in creating the checkering: here we observe a Scottish with smooth crossing dots and the embellishment given by the drops behind the back profiles of the folders.
Nowadays there are few hunters who lack something that stands out in the technique as to the weapons to be used: the variations and desires now follow another logical thread which is the one dictated by the search for sensations, for some new, for others revisited (depends on age ). We do not go to the spasmodic search for top ballistic performance to replenish the game bag but rather to place in the hunter those two or three heads captured with that given rifle that gives certain sensations enhanced by an elegant self-limitation in the yields for which you choose, for example, just the 20 gauge and the shotgun. The leaders captured in this way will have in the hunter's memory a corollary of thoughts that will make them unique and unforgettable.
