Wolves and canids in action
The experimentation activated under the banner of the circular economy continues for the benefit of farmers affected by disaster events predation. Also for this year, the Tuscany Region is funding the removal and disposal of the carcasses of animals preyed upon by wolves or canids with 30 thousand euros, which can be reused to feed the wolf specimens kept in the Amiata wildlife park.
Completion of the trial
“This is a measure adopted last year on an experimental basis for the provinces of Arezzo, Grosseto and Siena, the areas where 90% of Tuscany's predations take place – explains vice-president Stefania Saccardi – The experimental phase needs to be completed and we therefore deemed it necessary, also for the 2024 year, to contribute to the completion of the experiment. The Region will finance the Union of Mountain Municipalities which will recover the carcasses and store them in cold storage. The farmers will thus be relieved, in case they have been affected by predation, from having to bear the further expense of disposing of the carcasses and, at the same time, the budget of the Union of the mountain municipalities of the Amiata Grossetana will be met, which has entrusted with the management of the wolf and hybrids kept in the so-called Wolf Fort, a well-fenced area in which the animals are left free in the Amiata Park, a space created specifically to mitigate conflicts due to the presence of wolves and hybrids" .
The collaboration of the local health authorities
The disposal procedures will be carried out in collaboration with the local health authorities and according to European rules and regulations. Once the experimentation period is over, if the activity has given good results, it will be extended from the three sample provinces to the whole of Tuscany. (Source TOSCANANOTIZIE)
