Federcaccia's commitment to ornithological research continues with the launch of two data collection projects aimed at monitoring the woodcock population in our country for which it requests the participation of all hunters.
The SNAKE is a species of particular interest for Italian hunters, and under the magnifying glass of the environmental world both nationally and internationally. For this reason the Migratory Birdlife Office, in collaboration with the Amici di Scolopax Association, has focused its attention on this wild, promoting research in various areas.
The study initiatives that serve to contribute to the monitoring of woodcock populations affecting Italy, OPEN TO THE COLLABORATION OF ALL HUNTERS, concern the collection of wings (ALIregALI Project) and the collection of data on withdrawals (DIARY OF HUNTING).
Also in this case, as for the initiatives on other species, all those interested in the conservation of hunting for this species are asked to propose their commitment by contacting the Migratory Birds Office communicating NAME, SURNAME, E-MAIL, MOBILE PHONE , RESIDENCE ADDRESS and indicating the initiative you wish to join. Below are the details on the projects.
• 1 ALIregALI PROJECT: THE COLLECTION OF WINGS
PURPOSE: the collection of the wings allows to know the dynamics of the population that from year to year affect our peninsula.
WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: the hunter, following the collection, will cut the right wing (or in any case the best) of the Woodcock at the base and after having carefully dried it, he will note the date of capture, the weight and the location, (possibly the sex after an autopsy ) on each single specially prepared envelope, in the same envelope he will insert the wing which at the end of the season will be sent in a single shipment to the Bird Migration Office.
HOW TO JOIN: the Avifauna Office will ship the envelopes together with the instructions for collection. The hunters will then receive all the technical information on the woodcock killed in this way each participant will be made aware of their contribution.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT HUNTERS PARTICIPATE WHO WILL SEND A SAMPLE OF AT LEAST 90% OF THE PICKED PICKS FOR A STATISTICALLY UNATTACKABLE RESEARCH.
The results of the studies carried out on the wings in the years 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 which demonstrate the validity and importance of the project are available on the Federcaccia website in the Projects and Research section.
• 2 HUNTING DIARY PROJECT: COLLECTION OF DATA ON WITHDRAWALS
PURPOSE: as for the other migratory species, the woodcock hunting diary was created to collect data on sampling and sightings. The results of this study are crucial to understand the demographics of migrant and wintering populations in Italy.
WHAT IT CONSISTS: the hunter receives the hunting diary from the Avifauna Office at his residence address in which he will record the information requested relating to each hunting day carried out (eg number of killing, sightings, number of hunting hours, etc.). The diary will then be returned (in original or photocopy) to the Migratory Birds Office.
HOW TO JOIN: it would be useful for the hunters participating in the data collection to provide their commitment also for the collection of wings and vice versa. However, if not all hunters are willing to participate in both initiatives, the contribution to the single project will still be useful.
FOR ALL THESE RESEARCHES A MASSIVE PARTICIPATION OF HUNTERS IS ESSENTIAL. WE CANNOT ALLOW AN APPROXIMATE APPROACH ANY MORE, BUT WE ALL HAVE TO GIVE OUR CONTRIBUTION.
THE FUTURE OF WOODCOCK HUNTING IS IN OUR HANDS.
