The positive opinion provided byISPRA and that issued by Sicily region have allowed an interesting project of theFauna Permanent Office of Federcaccia to take off. It is about “Towards the sustainable hunting of the Italian hare (Lepus Corsicanus) in Sicily: good practices and monitoring actions”. The initiative of the island section of the hunting association is focused on management of this species in the Sicilian territory with a direct involvement of hunters in the various phases that serve for the realization.
The project was announced three months ago and intrigued the Department of Wildlife Management of the Territory, according to which the scientific and technical representatives were professional: the management was also judged a very valid point of reference also for other species in Sicily, first and foremost rock partridge. The faunal-hunting divisions are now fully available and will collaborate actively. The Federation will take care of the training of hunters, to be selected via a public notice.
But what are the specific objectives to be achieved? It is a question of monitoring populations annually, but also of training volunteer groups for the collection of data and samples and to raise awareness and involve hunters. Each hunter can submit an application to the Region for joining the project, but only one limited number will be involved, increasing the total based on the results achieved.
