Federcaccia Veneto, president Tosi writes to councilor Stival on the issue of the containment of Cansiglio deer.
Below is the letter addressed to the Veneto councilor for hunting Daniele Stival by the regional president of the Italian Federation of Hunting Flavio Tosi regarding the issue of deer in the Cansiglio Forest: "As regional president of Federcaccia I ask the regional councilor for hunting Daniele Stival to bring back to the council the proposal to subject the Cansiglio deer to numerical control, through the abatement of the quotas indicated by scholars. If the situation is not regulated, the plantations of the Cansiglio wood will be further exposed to the risk of destruction, which will not be renewed in the next twenty or thirty years. In the same way, deer will be exposed to epidemic risk which, being present in excess of the surface available to them and given their extreme fragility, are put in a position to develop diseases. For this reason, in the rest of Italy - primarily in parks - and in Europe, ungulates are subject to selection hunting, precisely to ensure their long-term conservation.
Of course it is not desirable, neither from an ethical point of view nor from a tourist one, to get the message of a slaughter of deer in the Cansiglio, but the risk to their health and the destruction of the vegetation caused by the supernumerary of these animals in the area, is not they are sustainable in the long run. It is therefore urgent to review the decision to stop the deer selection hunt, a de facto measure already approved both by the competent bodies of the Region and by the Ispra institute ”.
